Urban Lantern: Light and Air for Anganwadis
Leonie Singer
The 'Urban Lantern' intervention is a retrofit for an existing school in Ahmedabad's Vanjaravas neighbourhood. The concept aims to improve the school's climate conditions, bring in more daylight, and create a higher quality of space with more room for activities.

The new ventilation tower was developed as a kit of parts for easy assembly and disassembly allowing it to be relocated in case of insecure tenure. Small section components, both steel and timber were assembled using a flitch system and incorporated strategies for adjusting tollerance in new sites. The panels enclosing the frame can be attached using velcro allowing users to change the panels. The small structural dimensions and close spacing were envisaged to provide access for children seeking smaller and quieter spaces in what had been a single large classroom
