Holding onto Water

Simran Khatter

The project aims at dealing with water scarcity and water logging due to the seasonal imbalance of water supply. The vision is to treat the excess water as an asset by implementing cost effective strategies and create multifunctional shaded spaces.

The project aims at implementing rainwater harvesting systems on different scales to fulfill the community’s need for potable water in public spaces as well as individual households. These strategies are used to minimize this disparity and create a uniform water supply system for the settlement. This would help to store enough potable water for the community and also include treating the streets on site level to allow the water to percolate.

A network of open spaces will be designed to implement the RWH system or as a plug-in to other refuge spaces like temples, parks etc. For clusters and households, replicable structures with underground water tanks will be deployed to fulfill the water requirements.

The structures should be open to sky with no obstructions like trees or extended roofs to gain maximum rainwater and maximize the water storage.

A: Intersections:
Pilot project to test the structure and make the community aware about rainwater harvesting system.

B: Streets:
Potable water supply to households with no or limited water connections.

C: Lake Edge:
Potable water in public spaces, catering to mobile vendors, passersby and shops nearby.

D: Paved Open Space:
Multi-purpose shaded pavilion with access to potable water for the cluster.
