Elevated Escapes: Stack Ventilation for Dense, Shared Wall Housing

Vidhu Neve

Elevated Escapes is a modular roofing intervention for congested, poorly ventilated homes in dense neighbourhoods like Behrampura, Ahmedabad, developed through a prototype for local micro-entrepreneur Shravan Bhai. His claustrophobic living conditions reflect a wider urban condition the project seeks to address. The roof extension creates an open, sky-facing terrace that introduces ventilation, sunlight, structural stability and formal storage. Lightweight and easily assembled or dismantled, the system is modular, mass-producible and retrofit-friendly. Elevated Escapes transforms suffocated roofscapes into functional spaces of relief, anchoring a humane upgrade for homes struggling with space, climate and infrastructural constraints.

Elevated Escapes is a retrofitted roofing project aimed at providing solutions to all the 3 problems. The section allows evaporative cooled air inside and the air flows through the sides into the top. The top roof also acts as a terrace, creating an open space to sit. The section is built in a way to creates storage spaces throughout the plan at accessible heights, and allow convenient ventilation throughout the spaces. The entire intervention is made in such a way that it can be easily assembled and disassembled. This helps the ME in easy movement of parts. The assembly of parts are explained hereforth.
