Anityambar - Rethinking a Roadside Vendor's Stall

Rethinking the setup of a roadside vendor and his surroundings while retaining the quality of its impermanence on site and introducing the idea of fabric layers. The challenge is to rethink the design of market and vendor shops so they are more resilient to the intense heat radiated by the sun, black-tar roads and nearby vehicles. Borrowing from the vendor's response of layering fabric with different properties to sit on the ground, the project layers these fabrics to create a climate-responsive relationship between them, using air as insulation from heat or creating channels to direct air flow. This logic of fabric layering is expanded and developed upon to reimagine a vendor’s shop. This basic typology of a roadside vendor would be designed for the first time, redefining what a market space is, right at its smallest unit.

The design considerations:

It was imperative that the inflatbles did not take too much time to fill. Therefore, a key consideration was to alter the cube to retain a stable form with minimal volume. It roughly takes 3.5 minutes to fill up one unit right now, with protyping and further work, it can go down. Anthropometric considerations were taken into account. The dimensions are such that product encircles the vendor, but at the same time does not cut him off from his neighbours. The heigth was a result of the minimum height that will be required to create a pressure difference to encourage stack effect.
